About Aalborg University
Aalborg University is a public research university with campuses in Aalborg, Esbjerg and Copenhagen. It sits in North Denmark, and the Esbjerg unit is a department under the university that mainly educates engineers, with some niche programmes. The Copenhagen campus was formed in collaboration with the engineering college in Copenhagen.
The university was founded in 1974, when Aalborg University Center was inaugurated by Queen Margrethe II. The push for a university in the North Jutland Region began earlier, with a committee in 1961 and a demonstration of about 1,000 people outside the Danish Parliament. The centre took the name Aalborg University in 1994. It merged with the Danish Building Research Institute in 2007 and set up a Faculty of Medicine in 2010.
Teaching is organised around problems and projects. Semesters centre on complex real-life problems that students work through in groups and in a scientific manner, with an interdisciplinary basic course followed by specialisation. This is known internationally as The Aalborg Model. The university holds a UNESCO Chair in problem-based learning.
The Study in Denmark register lists 78 English-taught degree programmes: 4 at bachelor's level and 74 at master's level. Subjects include energy and renewable engineering, robotics, mechanical and civil engineering, environmental and materials engineering, computer science, accounting, international relations, fine arts, humanities and theology, entrepreneurship and industrial design. The university has five faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Engineering and Science, and Medicine.
For an international student, bachelor's applications go through optagelse.dk, while master's applications go directly to the university. Students from outside the EU/EEA need a residence permit through SIRI. Study is free for EU/EEA and Swiss students, and others pay an institutional fee.
The register in numbers
Fees are in euros as the institution lists them. A programme with no figure in the register is "not recorded" on its page, never free.
