Aarhus University

Aarhus University is a public research university in Aarhus, in the Central Denmark region. Its main campus sits in the University Park, a 12 hectare area of rolling hills laid out to a functionalist design in yellow brick and tile. The university is part of the Coimbra Group, the Guild and the Utrecht Network, and is a member of the European University Association.

The university began as University Studies in Jutland, founded in Aarhus as a response to growing student numbers at the University of Copenhagen. It started with rented classrooms at the Technical College and a small teaching corps. The first buildings went up in stages, funded by donations, including a gift of yellow bricks from a local tileworks. The Main Building followed later, with a more classical design that still stands apart from the rest of the campus. The university now has five faculties (Arts, Natural Sciences, Technical Sciences, Health, and Business and Social Sciences) and twenty seven departments, and it is home to over thirty internationally recognised research centres.

Teaching is organised within those faculties. Active researchers teach the classes, and students are expected to think critically and take part in open debate. Many courses are interdisciplinary. The university's alumni include Bjarne Stroustrup, the inventor of C++, Queen Margrethe II, King Frederik X and Anders Fogh Rasmussen. Jens Christian Skou did his work on the Na/K-ATPase in Aarhus and stayed at the university until retirement, and Trygve Haavelmo and Dale T. Mortensen were affiliated with it.

The Study in Denmark register lists 53 English taught degree programmes: 3 at Bachelor's level and 50 at Master's level. All PhDs are taught in English. Subjects on the register include Computer Science, Accounting, Cultural Studies, Fine Arts, Anthropology, Entrepreneurship, Mathematics, Journalism, Area Studies, Humanities and Theology, Agriculture, Linguistics, Mechanical Engineering and Food Science. Around 12 per cent of students are international, from 120 different countries.

Aarhus is a student city, with one in five inhabitants studying, and English is widely spoken. The International Centre runs an induction programme and offers support throughout your time at the university, and career services help with the move into work after graduation.

For international applicants, undergraduate applications go through optagelse.dk, while master's applications go direct to the university. Students from outside the EU/EEA need a residence permit via SIRI. Study is free for EU/EEA and Swiss students, and others pay an institutional fee.
