What you will study
The MSc in Software at Aalborg University in Copenhagen is a two-year master's programme taught in English. It focuses on internet development and distributed and mobile networks, from both a developer and a user perspective. You work with advanced software techniques and get access to current knowledge and technology.
What you study
The programme covers advanced software development, programming, mobile software technology and data-intensive systems. You can explore topics such as programming technologies and internet applications, agents or services. Mobile applications and services are also part of the mix, and you can choose subjects within IT law or entrepreneurship.
Each semester has a clear theme. In the first semester, you and your group do a project on the theme "Internet". You develop an internet application, agent or service. This ranges from common internet applications to autonomous agents and the Internet of Things, where internet technology links physical objects without a traditional browser-based user interface. Alongside the project, you take Programming Paradigms (5 ECTS) and choose two of four electives: Web Intelligence, Industrial Test and Verification, Data-intensive Systems, or Distributed Systems (5 ECTS each).
The second semester theme is "Mobility". You learn to develop mobile applications and services for equipment with limited screen, interaction, processor and memory resources, and with limited power consumption for wireless communication. The project module is Mobility (15 ECTS). You take Selected Topics in Programming (5 ECTS) and choose two of four electives: Software Innovation, Mobile HCI, Web Information Processing, or Mobile Data and Location-based Services (5 ECTS each).
In the third semester, you do a pre-specialisation project in Software (20 ECTS) that prepares you for your master's thesis. You work with and communicate a current research problem within software, choosing the topic with your supervisor. You also take a specialisation course (5 ECTS) and one of two electives: Entrepreneurship or IT-Law (5 ECTS each). The fourth semester is the master's thesis (30 ECTS), with no courses. The thesis includes a practical and/or theoretical study of issues within your chosen specialisation. On completion, you are awarded the degree cand.polyt (MSc in Engineering) in Software.
How the programme is organised
Teaching alternates between lectures and project work in study groups. The programme uses problem-based learning (PBL), a form of teaching that Aalborg University has helped develop. PBL provides the framework for the academic content and your everyday life on the programme. You work with realistic cases that reflect the challenges you may face as a software engineer in companies and society. Projects are often done in close collaboration with companies and other external partners. Group exams are part of the programme.
The programme is based at the Department of Computer Science on the Copenhagen campus. You share the campus with students from other programmes, such as Cyber- and Computer Technology and Cyber Security. Student clubs arrange social and academic activities all year round.
Who it suits
The programme suits you if you are interested in advanced software development, programming, mobile software technology and data-intensive systems. You should be curious about software technologies and complex software systems. You will gain cross-disciplinary skills and the opportunity to specialise in your areas of interest. The programme also gives you a strong foundation in advanced and data-intensive software and IT technologies, and you learn to design and develop complex systems and solutions for everyday use in a digitalised society.
