What you will study
The Master's in Sustainable Cities at Aalborg University is a two-year engineering degree taught in English at the Copenhagen campus. It is about developing the cities of the future, with a focus on climate change, environmental issues and urban infrastructure. You learn to merge technical, environmental and social considerations into a sustainable whole.
What you study
The programme is built around four infrastructure sectors: waste management, energy planning, water management and transport planning. In the first two semesters you work with these sectors and the synergies across them. Courses include:
- Transitioning from wasteful to sustainable cities (5 ECTS)
- Energy planning for sustainable cities (5 ECTS)
- Theories of science and research designs (5 ECTS)
- Water management and climate change adaptation (5 ECTS)
- Sustainable transport and mobility (5 ECTS)
- Urban infrastructure synergies (5 ECTS)
Each infrastructure course follows a stepwise approach: mapping the sector (for example CO2 or water amounts), sustainable engineering solutions (such as waste water basins, recycling or district heating), implementation and planning (market mapping, policy change, economic assessment), and opportunities or challenges (new jobs, risks, health). You also work with methods like impact assessments, sustainability assessments and energy modelling, and you use the EnergyPLAN tool to model complex energy systems. The programme addresses the UN Sustainable Development Goals and how cities and regions globally can create sustainable futures.
How the programme is organised
Teaching combines project work and courses. Each semester you and your group choose a topic for a project report within the semester theme. Projects often use real-life cases from municipalities, companies or organisations, and you can collaborate with external partners such as authorities, companies or NGOs. The first semester focuses on waste management, resources and energy planning. The second semester focuses on water management, transport planning and infrastructure synergies. The teaching mainly includes lectures and workshops, and you apply your skills and tools in the project work. The programme is a full-time study over two years. Aalborg University expects that from 2028 the degree will also be offered as a 3-year Master's for working professionals, with the first year full-time and the next two years part-time in combination with relevant employment.
Who it suits
This programme suits you if you want to help develop cities where people thrive and where energy, transport, water and waste are connected in sustainable solutions. You should be comfortable with cross-disciplinary collaboration and with analysing the consequences of different strategies. The programme teaches you to involve citizens, authorities, companies and organisations in urban development. You will learn to work analytically, holistically and in a solution-focused way with complex urban challenges, and to link technical analyses with societal and environmental considerations. If you like turning urban challenges into concrete solutions and working with real cases, this is a good fit.
Admission, language and next steps
The programme is open to Danish and international students with a relevant Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or equivalent. All courses are taught in English. The degree title is Master of Science in Engineering (Sustainable Cities). The study start is September. Applications for master's programmes go directly to the institution. Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland study free of charge; other students pay a fee set by the institution.
