What you will study

The Master's in Computer Science (IT) at Aalborg University is the international track of the computer science programme. IT here stands for international track, and the whole degree is taught in English. It is a two-year master's degree with a September start in Aalborg. The programme is different from the Danish-language Datalogiuddannelse.

What you study

The programme has two tracks: Information Technology (IT) and Computer Science (CS). You choose your track in the second semester. Before that, the first semester is built around the project Secure, Scalable and Useful Systems. You take two mandatory courses, Programming Paradigms and Machine Intelligence, and pick one elective from Selected Topics in Database Research and Practice, Distributed Systems or Selected Topics in HCI.

In the second semester the tracks split. On the Computer Science track the project is Reliable Innovative Systems, with courses in Machine Learning, Selected Topics in Modelling and Verification and Software Innovation. On the Information Technology track the project is Design, Definition and Implementation of Programming Languages, with courses in Agile Software Engineering, Languages and Compilers and Computability and Complexity.

The third semester is your pre-specialisation. The project is Pre-Specialisation in Computer Science, where you learn to communicate a topical research problem. You take the mandatory Entrepreneurship course and one specialisation course: Human-Computer Interaction, Database Technology, Distributed Systems, Semantics and Verification, Machine Intelligence, Programming Technology or System Development. The fourth semester is entirely your master's thesis, with no courses.

How the programme is organised

Teaching alternates between lectures and group project work. Half of each semester is spent on a project with fellow students, and groups are formed based on your choice of elective courses or track. You get feedback and support from professors, and you can collaborate with companies. In the third semester you can go abroad or spend the semester in a company. AAU's International Office can guide you, but you make your own preparations, including credit transfer, accommodation, insurance, visa and vaccinations. Bachelors who did not get their degree from Aalborg University take a course on problem based learning as part of the first semester project.

Who it suits

This programme is for you if you want to work with programming, programming languages, software engineering, machine intelligence, data management or embedded systems. You should be comfortable with group work and with building IT solutions for concrete problems. The international study environment gives you cross-disciplinary skills and strengthens project management, communication and innovation.
