What you will study
Culture, Communication and Globalization is a two-year master's programme at Aalborg University taught entirely in English. It looks at how culture and communication work together in a globalised world, with special focus on consumption and market communication, organisation and leadership, and international politics, migration and movements.
What you study
All students take a set of core courses: Cultural Worlds/Worlds of Culture, Intercultural communication, Globalization, Philosophy of Science and Methodology, and Applied methods. On top of that you choose profile courses that match the direction you want. The programme lists these profiles and their courses:
- Consumption and Market Communication: Understanding Consumption, Online Marketing
- Organisation and Leadership: Organisational Culture and Leadership, Organisational Culture and Communication
- International politics, migration and movements: Social Movements, Migration connections
You can also add a specialisation: Arctic Studies, Global Gender Studies or Chinese Area Studies. Or you can take elective courses on current issues instead. Course titles and content can vary from one year to another.
How the programme is organised
The first two semesters are coursework: core courses for everyone, then profile courses depending on your choices. If you take a specialisation, you follow two specialisation modules of 5 ECTS in the first and second semesters. In the third semester you either do an internship or a mobility stay in Denmark or abroad. No courses are offered that semester. For the specialisation route, the third semester is an element-based project (15 ECTS) within a problem area relevant to your specialisation. The fourth semester is the master's thesis (30 ECTS), which you can write in collaboration with your former internship place. With a specialisation, the thesis emphasises one or more dimensions of that specialisation.
Teaching switches between preparation, project writing, lectures, workshops and group work. Courses are project- and group-oriented, and you work on real-world problems with your fellow students. The internship lasts at least three months. You find your own placement and plan the content, which the programme coordinator approves. It must have an international or intercultural dimension and be relevant to the programme. Previous placements include Amnesty International, UNESCO, Red Cross, Lego, Green Globe, embassies, Arla Foods, Vestas and Torm.
Who it suits
This programme suits you if you are interested in culture, communication and international relations in the context of current global issues, or if you want to understand global complexities. You should be ready to work in groups and on projects, and to take responsibility for planning your own internship or mobility stay. The study environment is multicultural, with students from all over the world.
