About this programme
Master in Tourism, MA is a Master's Degree programme at Aalborg University in Aalborg, taught in English. It runs for 2 years. The register gives Aalborg as the campus town. It lists the degree as Master (2 years). Aalborg University is a research university in North Denmark.
What you will study
The Master's in Tourism at Aalborg University takes a critical look at one of the world's largest industries. You work with cultural encounters, innovation and sustainability in tourism, and you do it through cases from all over the world. The programme is taught in English and has an international outlook.
What you study
You combine theory and method from the social sciences and the humanities. That gives you a mix of competences: you learn to analyse problems and data in tourism, innovation, cultural meetings, marketing communications, consumption, sustainability and politics. The first two semesters build a common theoretical frame of reference for studying tourism in an international context.
How the programme is organised
The first half of each of the first two semesters is made up of modules that introduce relevant theories and cases. In the second half, teaching takes the form of a problem-based research project. You work in small groups, often with a real-life tourism problem, and you have a supervisor. The third semester is yours to choose. You can do an internship in a tourism organisation in Denmark or abroad (minimum four months), study at another university, take 30 ECTS at another university or another Master's programme at AAU, or follow the AAU start up programme and work on your own business idea with an experienced entrepreneur. The fourth semester is the master's thesis, an in-depth problem-based project on a tourism topic you choose, alone or in a small group, with supervisor support.
The programme works closely with companies and decision-makers. You will meet guest lecturers from the business community and NGOs, and you can collaborate with local and external organisations on your projects. Recent internship placements include Visit Denmark in Copenhagen, Arctic Adventures in Reykjavik, the Danish Embassy in Tokyo, Hilton Hotel in Prague, the Centre for Green Transitions in Aalborg and the Danish Immigration Museum in Elk Horn, USA.
Who it suits
This programme is for you if you are interested in international affairs and want to work with tourism. You should care about the cultural, social and environmental impacts of tourism and want to solve the issues in the field. The work style is project- and group-oriented, so you get to shape your study programme around the topics that interest you most. You also build skills in project management and collaboration through your semester projects.
