About Roskilde University

Roskilde University is a public research university in Trekroner, on the eastern side of Roskilde, in Region Zealand. It was founded in 1972 as an alternative to the traditional Danish universities, which students at the time saw as undemocratic and too controlled by professors. The early years were built around group work and projects rather than lectures and set exams. Those ideas were controversial then; the older universities have since taken much of the model on themselves, and group project work is now a recognised academic method in Denmark.

The university awards bachelor's, master's and PhD degrees across the humanities, humanistic technologies, social science and science, organised into four departments: Communication and Arts, Science and Environment, People and Technology, and Social Sciences and Business. Teaching today follows the standard Danish structure of a three-year bachelor followed by a two-year master. The university describes itself as research-driven and problem-oriented, with research focused where it holds national or international standing, and with close ties between the university and wider society. It is a member of the University of the Arctic.

The register lists 14 English-taught degree programmes: 3 bachelor's and 11 master's. Subjects span environmental science, biology, physics, computer science, fine arts, entrepreneurship, development studies, business administration, agriculture, accounting and law. The three international bachelor programmes are in the humanities, the natural sciences and social science.

For an international student, the practical side matters as much as the teaching model. Undergraduate applications go through optagelse.dk, while master's applications go directly to the university. Students from outside the EU/EEA need a residence permit, handled through SIRI. Study is free for EU/EEA and Swiss students; others pay an institutional fee set by the university.
