What you will study

Energy Engineering at Aalborg University is a two year master's programme taught in English. You learn to analyse, develop and optimise energy technologies across thermal, electrical and mechatronic systems, and to work with the energy processes behind producing, distributing and using energy.

What you study

The programme covers renewable sources such as wind, solar and biomass, and newer technologies such as Power-to-X, carbon capture and hybrid energy production. You work with advanced simulation tools and mathematical methods to analyse and optimise energy systems. The teaching alternates between theoretical courses, laboratory exercises and problem-based project work, and you have access to a range of laboratories at AAU Energy used for both research and study projects.

You choose between six specialisations, and each has its own semester overview and academic content. Whichever you pick, you and your study group go in depth with topics you are curious about, and project work can be done with companies.

How the programme is organised

You work in groups on real-world problems, for example developing engineering solutions, regulating power systems or integrating fuel cells. Projects are often carried out with companies, so you see how energy technologies are used in practice. In the third semester you can take a company internship (a project-based placement) in Denmark or abroad, or spend a semester at another Danish or international university.

The programme is offered as a two year full-time master's (120 ECTS credits). AAU also expects that from 2028 it can be taken as a three year master's for working professionals, with the first year full-time and the next two years part-time alongside relevant employment.

Who it suits

This suits you if you want to develop and drive technological development within sustainable energy, and if you like working on technical problems in groups rather than only attending lectures. The programme builds a technical profile with specialised knowledge of energy technologies and energy systems, and you learn to develop, simulate and analyse complex systems and design new technical solutions based on real needs. You also gain experience with cross-disciplinary projects and project management.

Admission, language and next steps

The programme is taught in English. The entry requirements and the application procedure are set out on the programme's admission and requirements pages, so check those before you apply, and check what documentation of English proficiency you need to provide. Master's applications go straight to the institution. You can also apply as a guest or exchange student rather than for the full master's.

Student counsellors for the Study Board of Energy can answer questions about programme content, study environment and exam rules, and you can book an online or physical meeting to talk about studying at AAU. Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland study free of charge; other students pay a fee that the institution sets.
