What you will study

What you study

The Master's in Electronic Systems is for people who want to work where hardware, software and artificial intelligence meet. You learn how electronic circuits are designed and integrated with intelligent systems, how algorithms for signal processing work, and how to model and optimise complex systems.

The programme has three core technological areas: machine learning and signal processing, control and automation, and communication technology, including radio systems. You also build skills in real-time system design, stochastic systems and signals, mathematical modelling, distributed systems, communication and intelligent signal processing.

Courses are named and credit-bearing. On the first semester you take Machine Learning (5 ECTS) and Stochastic Systems (5 ECTS), plus two from Advanced Signal Processing, Modelling of Physical Systems, Communication Systems, Performance and Reliability Analysis of Communication Networks, or Perception and Acquisition of Data (5 ECTS each). The second semester adds Sensors and Systems (5 ECTS) and Networks and Systems (5 ECTS), plus one from Fundamentals of Acoustics and Sound, Numerical Scientific Computing, Deep Learning, or Advanced Control (5 ECTS each).

How the programme is organised

Teaching alternates between lectures and group project work. You and your fellow students develop IT solutions for concrete problems, such as ultra-reliable wireless communication, process control with AI, embedded systems, Internet of Things and smart electronics. Professors give feedback and support, and you have the chance to collaborate with companies.

The programme runs over four semesters. The first semester project is Machine Intelligence (10 ECTS). The second semester project is Systems of Systems (15 ECTS). In the third semester you have five options. Option A is a project in Engineering Systems (Scientific Communication) worth 20 ECTS. Options B, C and D are project-oriented study in an external organisation, worth 20, 25 or 30 ECTS. Option E covers the third and fourth semesters and includes a long master's thesis (50 ECTS). The third semester also includes the mandatory course Advances in Electronic Systems (5 ECTS) for options A, B and E, plus electives. The fourth semester is spent entirely on the master's thesis (30 ECTS), which you do alone or in a small group of two or three. You can also go abroad or spend the third semester in a company.

Who it suits

Choose this programme if you are interested in how electronic circuits are designed and integrated with intelligent systems, want to learn about algorithms for signal processing, and are curious about modelling and optimising complex systems. It suits people who like working across hardware, software and AI, and who are comfortable with group project work.

Admission, language and next steps

The programme is taught in English and starts in September. It is a two-year master's degree. All bachelors enrolled who have not obtained their bachelor's degree from Aalborg University must take part in a course on problem based learning as part of the first semester project. If non-AAU bachelors get credit transfer for the first semester, they will be asked to take part in a course ensuring they are trained in working according to the problem based learning model.

Applications for master's programmes go directly to the institution. Check the programme page for the exact admission requirements and how to apply. Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland study free of charge. Other students pay a fee set by the institution.

Before you apply

Master’s applications go straight to Aalborg University, not through optagelse.dk, and the institution sets its own deadline. Entry requirements and language tests are set by the institution, so start from the official programme page. Our guides cover tuition fees, residence permits and housing.

Facts on this page come from the Study in Denmark register, the official portal of the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science. Fees are in euros as the institution lists them. "Not recorded" means the register has no figure, not that the programme is free. Always confirm requirements, fees and deadlines with the institution.
