What you will study

The MSc in Water and Environmental Engineering at Aalborg University trains you to tackle water and environmental problems in cities, industry, agriculture and nature. The programme is taught in English and takes two years in Aalborg.

What you study

You learn to work with resource and environmental issues tied to society's use of water and the environment. With your study group you do field measurements, laboratory analyses and advanced computer models. You analyse and manage contamination that can affect people, and you work on protecting soil and groundwater. You study flows in and pollution of streams, lakes and fjords, and you assess contaminated water environments and flood-prone areas, mapping consequences for local communities and wildlife.

The first semester focuses on pollution of soil and groundwater. Your project might look at a polluted industrial site or a farmed area, assess whether the pollution threatens groundwater or nearby residents, and find methods to clean up soil and groundwater. The second semester covers natural water environments such as streams, lakes and fjords. The project combines physical, chemical and biological conditions using data from a chosen location, lab analyses and numerical models.

How the programme is organised

Teaching is in English and built around group and project work. In your final year (3rd and 4th semesters) you choose whether to continue without a specialisation or with one. The specialisation focuses on resource, hydrological and hydraulic conditions and new pollutants in cities, water and soil from climate change and increasing strain on ecosystems. The specialisation "Environmental Processes" focuses on how climate change influences biological, chemical and physical processes in natural and environmental engineering systems.

On the third semester you have options: an internship in Denmark or abroad where you take part in day-to-day operations and write a project about your tasks; a semester at another institution in Denmark or abroad; a regular semester at AAU with courses and project work; or you can begin your master's thesis so the work is spread over the 3rd and 4th semesters. The fourth semester is your master's thesis on a topic of your own choosing.

Who it suits

Choose this programme if you want to address major water and environmental challenges, from rising sea levels and flooding to pollution and sustainable use of natural resources. You should be ready to analyse complex issues and find technical solutions that consider nature, society and climate. You will work across disciplines and collaborate with companies, authorities and research communities during your studies. The programme suits people who want to help ensure clean water, resilient cities and healthy ecosystems.
