What you will study

The MSc in Geology at Aarhus University is a two-year research-centred programme. You can shape the degree around your own interests, in the lab and in the field.

What you study

The programme covers most classic geological disciplines in modern form. Teaching is integrated with research at the Department of Geoscience, which works in quaternary geology, hydrogeology, basin and lithosphere geology (oil geology and geothermics), micropalaeontology and climate research, structural geology, petrology, and geochemistry. The department also collaborates closely with the Department of Archaeology.

You choose one of four specialisations in the first year. Modules are 5 or 10 ECTS, and a full year is 60 ECTS. The second year is dedicated to your Master's thesis. You work closely with technical staff and with Danish and international researchers. Teamwork is part of the setup, and there are opportunities to partner with private companies for research.

Admission, language and next steps

To apply, you need a relevant university degree at bachelor's level (180 ECTS) and must meet the programme's specific requirements, including English language requirements. The programme admits a limited number of students, so meeting the requirements does not guarantee a place. Places are allocated on an overall assessment of your academic background, your overall grade level, your grades on relevant courses, and the relevant courses (in credit units) in your bachelor's degree. Relevant courses include core courses in geology, geophysics, physics, chemistry, mathematics, probability theory, statistics, and programming.

Applications for master's programmes go directly to Aarhus University. Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland study free of charge; other students pay a tuition fee set by the institution. Aarhus University offers a limited number of Danish state scholarships for highly qualified non-EU students. The programme is taught in English.
