How it compares

Master in Civil and Architectural Engineering is one of 16 English-taught Engineering programmes at Master's Degree level in the register, offered by 4 institutions. 7 of them list an annual fee for students from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, from EUR 3,515 to EUR 17,300; this programme lists EUR 16,300 a year. 6 are recorded as free for EU, EEA and Swiss students.

What you will study

The MSc in Civil and Architectural Engineering at Aarhus University is a two-year full-time master's programme taught in English. It bridges advanced research with real-world application and focuses on the analysis, design and optimisation of buildings and infrastructure. You combine classical engineering with digital technologies such as programming, simulation, modelling and machine learning.

What you study

The programme builds on your bachelor's degree and develops specialist knowledge in structural behaviour, building performance, materials, energy and urban infrastructure. You explore questions such as how to reduce the carbon footprint of construction, how data and sensors can make buildings more intelligent and adaptable, and how to create infrastructure that is both strong and sustainable.

When you begin, you choose one of five specialisation tracks:

  • Infrastructures and Geotechnical Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Innovative Structural Design
  • Building Science and Technology
  • Construction Management and Engineering

Each track lets you shape your studies around your interests and future career, whether you want to work with large-scale infrastructure, innovative materials, smart buildings or the management and transformation of the construction industry.

How the programme is organised

Teaching is research-based and project-driven. You work with real-world cases and learn to lead development processes that support the long-term transformation of the construction industry. The programme combines lectures, group work and project-based learning. You collaborate with fellow students on assignments and design projects, often using digital tools, simulations and lab experiments. Courses are designed to support academic freedom, giving you flexibility to pursue your own interests, choose electives and define your own project topics.

You are based at Navitas, a modern campus building in the heart of Aarhus, with light-filled study spaces and advanced laboratories. The environment is open and collaborative, and you will work closely with researchers and often with companies. You can also get involved in research yourself or work with companies on real-life challenges from the industry.

Who it suits

The programme suits students with a bachelor's degree in civil and architectural engineering or a closely related field who want to specialise in sustainable, data-driven construction. You should be curious about how digital tools can improve building performance and infrastructure, and you should enjoy working across disciplines. The Danish academic culture is informal, with dialogue and curiosity encouraged, and teamwork is a cornerstone of the teaching. You will work with students from different cultural and academic backgrounds, so openness to collaboration matters.

Admission, language and next steps

To be admitted, you need a bachelor's degree or equivalent comparable to a Danish bachelor's degree (180 ECTS). Your degree must include at least 60 ECTS in one of these areas: Construction Management, Integrated Energy Design/Technical installations, Bearing Constructions, Geotechnical Engineering, or Architectural Engineering. You also need 20 ECTS in mathematics (calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics). The programme has limited intake, so meeting the requirements does not guarantee a place. Applicants are ranked by grades from the qualifying degree and grades in relevant subject fields: mathematics, engineering design of structures, and one of construction analysis, indoor climate and building physics, structural analysis and geotechnical engineering, or construction management. If you hold a bachelor's degree in Civil and Architectural Engineering from Aarhus University, you have a legal right of admission if you apply within three years of completing your degree.

English language requirements apply. Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland study free of charge; other students pay a fee set by the institution. Applications for master's programmes go directly to Aarhus University. The programme starts in August or September, and a February start is also offered for international applicants. The next step is to check the official programme page for detailed application deadlines and document requirements.

Job opportunities after graduating

  • Consulting engineering firms, working with design, analysis, simulation or project development
  • Construction and infrastructure companies, overseeing planning and execution on-site
  • Public authorities or municipalities, helping implement green policies in the built environment
  • Innovation teams in companies working with digitalisation, smart buildings, harbour and offshore projects, or new construction technologies
  • Research institutions or universities, continuing with a PhD

Before you apply

Master’s applications go straight to Aarhus University, not through optagelse.dk, and the institution sets its own deadline. Entry requirements and language tests are set by the institution, so start from the official programme page. Our guides cover tuition fees, residence permits and housing.

Facts on this page come from the Study in Denmark register, the official portal of the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science. Fees are in euros as the institution lists them. "Not recorded" means the register has no figure, not that the programme is free. Always confirm requirements, fees and deadlines with the institution.
