What you will study

The MSc in Agrobiology at Aarhus University is a two year full time master's programme taught in English. It builds on biological knowledge of sustainable animal and plant production, with attention to health, welfare, product quality and environmental impact. The programme starts in August or September, with no winter intake.

What you study

You choose one of four tracks and add elective courses on top of the mandatory courses in your track.

  • Animal Science: you specialise in topics such as animal breeding, applied behavioural biology, animal diseases or food science. You learn to assess energy and nutrient requirements of livestock for growth, milk production and reproduction, and to assess how management, production, health and animal welfare interact in typical livestock systems.
  • Agronomy and Environment: compulsory courses run through the first and part of the second semester. You then specialise in topics such as sustainability, environment and agriculture, working on solutions that combine food demand with sustainable management of nature, climate and environment. You gain an understanding of agro-ecosystem processes and the interaction between agricultural production, nature and environmental management.
  • Crop Nutrition and Health: you specialise in topics such as foods, feed and bioenergy, cropping systems and plant biotechnology. The track gives you basic insight into the elements of plant growth common to all crops.
  • Organic Agriculture: this track is divided into Animal Science or Plant Science, combined with a focus on organic agriculture. It is interdisciplinary, with emphasis on project work and contact with farms and research.

The master's thesis can be completed in a university research context or in a company R&D environment.

How the programme is organised

The degree is full time over two years. Teaching includes discussion based courses, and a graduate describes the ground subjects in crop physiology and nutrition as built from the base with real world research examples. The international character of the programme is part of the learning environment, with students from many countries, and many students spend a semester at one of AU's partner universities.

Who it suits

This programme suits you if you want to work with the challenges climate change and population growth pose to agricultural production: producing more food while protecting animal welfare, the environment and natural resources. It fits students with a bachelor's background in agrobiology, biology or related fields who want to tailor their degree through a track and electives.

Admission, language and next steps

You need a bachelor's degree or equivalent comparable to a Danish bachelor's degree (180 ECTS). Specific requirements are 60 ECTS in components in agrobiology and 30 ECTS in basic chemistry, biochemistry and mathematics, totalling 90 ECTS. For applicants with a professional bachelor's degree, 40 ECTS must be in the relevant specialisation (crop science or animal science).

Certain degrees give direct admission: Agrobiology from Aarhus University; Biology from Aarhus University, Aalborg University, University of Copenhagen and University of Southern Denmark; Natural Resources from University of Copenhagen; and Animal Science or Veterinary Science from University of Copenhagen. A bachelor's in Agrobiology from Aarhus University gives a legal right of admission if you apply within three years of completing it.

Intake is limited, and applicants are ranked on grades from the qualifying degree, grades in relevant subject fields (agrobiology, chemistry, biochemistry, mathematics) and the proportion of relevant ECTS. You must meet the university's English language requirements. Apply through the institution's own application system for this master's programme. Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland study free of charge; other students pay a fee set by the institution.

The last intake for this programme is in 2026. From 2027, you can apply to AU Viborg's master's programmes in Animal Science or Plant and Soil Science.
