What you will study

The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at Aarhus University is a two-year full-time programme taught in English. It builds on your bachelor's degree and lets you specialise in areas such as electronics, communication systems, renewable energy, chip design, photonics, signal processing and artificial intelligence. You work with complex problems and learn to turn theory into practice.

What you study

The programme is made up of 20 ECTS mandatory interdisciplinary engineering competencies, 40 ECTS within a specialisation and 30 ECTS electives. You put together your own study plan with academic guidance. There are eleven specialisations: AI & Computer vision, Biomedical Engineering (only offered in Danish), Chip design, Communications and Networks, Cyber-Physical Systems, Cybersecurity, Electronics & Photonics, Healthcare Technology, Renewable Energy Systems, Robotics and Drone Technology, and Software Engineering. Within your specialisation you combine Level I (fundamental) and Level II (advanced) courses, and you must earn at least 15 ECTS at Level II. For electives you can choose from courses across Aarhus University.

How the programme is organised

The programme is two years, four semesters. The first three semesters follow a fixed structure: 20 ECTS mandatory interdisciplinary engineering competencies, 40 ECTS specialisation and 30 ECTS electives. Teaching mixes lectures, small-group classes and project-based learning. You take a scientific and experimental approach, working hands-on with prototypes and testing ideas in practice. Much of the teaching is research-based, and you are taught by active researchers. You can also take part in research projects yourself. Teamwork is central, and you work closely with students from different cultural and academic backgrounds. You study at Katrinebjerg, the IT city of Aarhus, close to the main campus and the city centre.

Who it suits

This programme suits you if you have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field and want to specialise. You should be comfortable with mathematics, physics and electronics at bachelor level. The programme is for someone who likes to combine theory with practical work, who wants to choose courses that match their interests, and who enjoys working in teams. If you are curious about research and want to work with real-world problems in collaboration with business partners, this is a good fit. The programme also offers other ways to take it: as a four-year work-integrated Master or as a three-year Combined Master.

Admission, language and next steps

To be admitted, you need a bachelor's degree comparable to a Danish bachelor's degree (180 ECTS). Specific requirements are 20 ECTS in mathematics (calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics), 5 ECTS in physics (classical physics, electrostatics and dynamics, classical optics, basic quantum mechanics), 30 ECTS in electrical engineering (digital and analogue electronics) and 10 ECTS in at least one of communication systems, control technology or digital signal processing. The total is 65 ECTS. If you have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Aarhus University, you have a legal right of admission if you apply within three years of completing your degree. A number of other Danish bachelor's degrees give direct admission. If you hold a non-Danish bachelor's degree, you must complete an appendix and upload it to the application portal. All master's programmes at Aarhus University have limited intake, and applicants are ranked by grades from the qualifying degree and grades in relevant subject fields. The programme is taught in English, and you must meet the university's English language requirements. Applications for master's programmes go directly to the institution. Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland study free of charge; other students pay a fee set by the institution.
