What you will study

Technology Based Business Development is a two year full time Master of Science in Engineering at Aarhus University. It is taught in English on the Herning campus, and it is about turning new technology into business. You learn to collect, understand and assess technological insights and weigh them against business opportunities.

What you study

The programme is built on transforming companies. That means starting from a close look at how a company operates today, then judging what new technology could do for it. You work with technology management, the implementation of new technology, and the management of operating and development processes.

You pick one of three focus areas:

  • Technology and operations management
  • Energy systems
  • Digitalisation

Whichever you choose, the starting point is the same: insight into existing operations plus an assessment of technological potentials.

How the programme is organised

The first two semesters are compulsory core courses and project work. After that you specialise. The page lists several ways to do it: elective subjects, exchange programmes with other Danish or foreign universities, collaboration with companies, or entrepreneurship.

Practice runs through the whole degree. Project assignments are carried out with companies, and you are expected to find companies and assignments that fit your technology specialisation and your Master's thesis. The technology specialisations normally include field work outside campus, for example in companies.

Teaching is mostly on Mondays and Tuesdays in the first two semesters, roughly 8.15 to 15.00 or 16.00. The rest of the week is for company activities, exercises, class preparation and group work. Group work is mandatory and can run Wednesday to Friday. Most teaching takes place at the Herning campus.

The programme is also offered as a part time Master's degree programme for working professionals, and as a four year work integrated programme.

Who it suits

It suits someone with an engineering or technical bachelor's who wants to work on the business side of technology rather than stay purely technical. You should like company contact, group work and projects that start from a real operation. The qualifying bachelor's must include at least 80 ECTS in one of these fields: industrial engineering, software engineering, electro-mechanical engineering, technical design and sustainability, or science subjects such as chemistry, physics, geology, geography, bioscience, nuclear, nano or biology with an emphasis on industrial and technological practices. Dissertation projects and internships do not count towards the 80 ECTS.

Direct admission is open to certain degrees, including a BEng or BSc in Engineering from a Danish university or university college, Technology Management and Marine Engineering (Maskinmester), and Value Chain Management. No Aarhus University bachelor's gives a legal right of admission to this programme.

Admission, language and next steps

Intake is limited, so meeting the entry requirements does not guarantee a place. When qualified applicants outnumber places, three criteria each count one third: your grade level from the qualifying degree, your grade in a relevant subject area (products, energy systems, operations and supply chains, or digital applications), and other relevant experience. That last one is a relevance description of 1 to 2 pages, up to 2,400 characters including spaces, covering the courses, projects and practical experience that prepare you for technology development and technology-based business model innovation.

You must meet the university's English language requirements. Aarhus University does not assess qualifications in advance; you have to apply to be assessed. Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland study free of charge, while other students pay a fee set by the institution.

Career

Graduates can generate innovative product concepts, business concepts and business areas. The most common job functions one to two years after finishing are project management, product and production management, product development and innovation, management and organisation, and analysis and evaluation.

International students on the programme can apply for the Talent Fellowship, which aims to boost international talents' employability in Danish companies. Career Services offers advice on getting onto the Danish labour market.
