What you will study

Social Entrepreneurship and Management at Roskilde University is a two-year master's programme taught in English. It is the only full-time academic programme in Denmark focused solely on social entrepreneurship, social innovation and management, and one of very few in Europe. The programme is closed for admission. Only students holding a bachelor's degree from Roskilde University with a legal right of admission (retskrav) can still be admitted.

What you study

You learn how socially innovative organisations work and how they can be managed. The programme covers the different theoretical traditions and definitions of social enterprise and social entrepreneurship, and models and techniques for business development in social enterprises. You study the social economy, new forms of economic organising, Corporate Social Responsibility, co-production, democratic forms of organising and sustainability-related initiatives. Courses include Entering the field, methods and philosophy of science (5 ECTS), Theory and cases of social enterprise in the context of social transformation (10 ECTS), Social innovation, social change and sustainable transition (10 ECTS), Business understanding and doing social entrepreneurship (5 ECTS) and Management and leadership of social entrepreneurship in a multi-stakeholder context (10 ECTS). On the second semester you take either Financial Accounting (Track E) or Social Accounting (Track S), depending on your bachelor's background. The programme ends with a 30 ECTS master's thesis.

How the programme is organised

Teaching draws on both the social sciences and organisational management. Much of the work is done through problem-oriented group projects where you apply theories, use analytical tools and communicate your results. You often work with actual organisations and companies, for example through Innovation Labs where you analyse and offer solutions to real-life problems in the sector. You can choose an internship or a semester of exchange at a partner university abroad. The third semester has two variants: one combines courses with a project or internship, the other is a 30 ECTS project-oriented internship. The programme is built on Roskilde University's project format, where you identify a problem, choose a methodological approach and set up a theoretical framework under the guidance of a researcher.

Who it suits

The programme attracts students from all over the world, many with experience in social and volunteer work, who want to create meaningful change. It suits you if you want to lead social innovation processes in socio-economic enterprises, public authorities, private companies or civil society organisations. You should be comfortable working with complex, multi-stakeholder situations and interested in issues such as unemployment, social inequality, green production and sustainability. The international study environment brings together upwards of 25 nationalities.
