About this programme

Master of Science in Engineering Acoustics is a Master's Degree programme at Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby, taught in English. The register gives Lyngby as the campus town. It lists the degree as Master of Science (MSc). Technical University of Denmark is a research university in Capital Region.

How it compares

Master of Science in Engineering Acoustics is one of 16 English-taught Engineering programmes at Master's Degree level in the register, offered by 4 institutions. 7 of them list an annual fee for students from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, from EUR 3,515 to EUR 17,300. 6 are recorded as free for EU, EEA and Swiss students.

What you will study

Sound is everywhere: traffic noise, music, the way a room carries a voice. This MSc in Engineering Acoustics at DTU teaches you to work with sound and vibration from both a physical and a human angle. You learn to design solutions that improve health, comfort and sustainability.

What you study

The programme covers wave propagation, acoustical modelling, signal processing and measurement techniques. You also study hearing, perception and how sound interacts with the auditory system. Laboratory work, teamwork and project-based learning are part of the teaching, so you get hands-on experience with real acoustic systems.

You can choose from five specialisations:

  • Audio and Transducer Technology: audio systems, loudspeakers and microphones, signal processing, spatial sound and system design.
  • Hearing Science and Perception: hearing, auditory perception and speech acoustics, with applications in hearing technology, healthcare and audiology research.
  • Architectural Acoustics and Environment: room acoustics, environmental noise and acoustic design for indoor and outdoor spaces.
  • Vibration, Structures and Sound: vibration analysis, structural acoustics and sound radiation in engineering and industrial contexts.
  • Signal Processing and Machine Learning: audio analysis, modelling and machine learning for technology-driven applications.

How the programme is organised

Teaching combines a strong theoretical foundation with experimental work and practical engineering methods. You work in laboratories and in teams on projects that address complex sound-related challenges. The polytechnical approach lets you work across disciplines and apply acoustics in many contexts.

You also have the option to join an Industry Master of Science, which combines work and study. That track lets you apply your academic knowledge in a company while you earn your degree.

Who it suits

This programme suits you if you are curious about the physics of sound and also care about how people experience it. You should be comfortable with mathematics, physics and signal processing, and you should enjoy experimental work and teamwork. If you want to work with audio technology, hearing, building acoustics, vibration or sound processing, this is a direct path.

Admission, language and next steps

The programme is taught in English. To apply, you need to meet the academic prerequisites for Engineering Acoustics, which are set out on DTU's programme page. Applicants with a bachelor's degree from outside Denmark should contact DTU's International Admissions Office for guidance on the application process. Applications for master's programmes go directly to DTU.

Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland study free of charge. Other students pay a fee set by the institution. For questions about course planning, credit transfer or exemptions, DTU's Study Guidance service can help.

Job opportunities after graduating

  • Audio and hearing technology development (e.g. hearing aids, audio equipment, sound systems)
  • Acoustic engineering at consulting firms
  • Vibration engineering
  • Building and infrastructure acoustics
  • Environmental noise and urban sound design
  • Consumer electronics and sound quality
  • Healthcare technology and audiology research
  • PhD research in acoustics

Before you apply

Master’s applications go straight to Technical University of Denmark, not through optagelse.dk, and the institution sets its own deadline. Entry requirements and language tests are set by the institution, so start from the official programme page. Our guides cover tuition fees, residence permits and housing.

Facts on this page come from the Study in Denmark register, the official portal of the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science. Fees are in euros as the institution lists them. "Not recorded" means the register has no figure, not that the programme is free. Always confirm requirements, fees and deadlines with the institution.
