What you will study

This is a two-year master's at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense. It is taught in English and builds on a bachelor's in biology or a related field. The department's research is strong in environmental stress, sound communication and behaviour, ecology, evolutionary biodemography, Arctic biology and Earth evolution, and you can shape the degree around what interests you most.

What you study

The first year gives you a broad set of competences in biology through courses that are mainly experimental. You work in groups, and several courses include fieldwork at the department's terrestrial, freshwater and marine field stations. You can keep a broad profile or specialise in one of three tracks: animal sound communication and behaviour, environmental biology, or marine science. The second year is mostly research, and your individual MSc thesis is the main result. You also have the chance to earn a commercial diving certificate as part of the programme.

Admission, language and next steps

To be admitted, you need a bachelor's degree in biology or another degree based on at least three years of higher education after high school, with good grades. Your qualifications in biology must correspond to at least 60 ECTS and cover the structures and functions of biomolecules and cells; the systematics, structures, development and functions of organisms; the interaction between organisms and their environment; and the evolution of life. You also need fundamental knowledge of mathematics, chemistry and statistics. Apply directly to the University of Southern Denmark with all relevant documentation. You may also need to document your English proficiency at a specified level; check the university's language requirements. EU/EEA and Swiss students study free of charge. Other students pay a tuition fee set by the institution. SDU offers 75 scholarships yearly; see the university's scholarship page for details. If you are unsure whether your foreign certificate meets the entry requirements, contact the university directly. The Danish Agency for Higher Education has a list of commonly recognised exams and diplomas.
