What you will study
The Teacher Education programme at University College South Denmark in Haderslev leads to a Bachelor of Education. It is a four-year full-time degree that qualifies you to teach in Danish primary and lower secondary schools. The first year is taught in English while you learn Danish. From the second year onwards, teaching is in Danish, so you finish the degree in the language you will teach in.
What you study
You choose three teaching subjects. All international students take English as their first teaching subject. The programme also includes psychology and education, taught in English in the first two years. You get real classroom experience through four internships during the degree, with the first one in your first two years. The syllabus mixes lectures, group work, student presentations and project-oriented learning. Blended learning is part of the teaching approach.
You must live in Denmark and study Danish alongside the degree. Intensive Danish language training is provided in the first year, and you have free access to Danish lessons at Haderslev language centre.
How the programme is organised
The first two years focus on becoming an English teacher in an international class with students from more than 15 nationalities. You study on Campus Haderslev. From year two, lessons are in Danish, and you continue with your other teaching subjects. The four internships are spread across the programme. The structure is set out in a specially designed syllabus for incoming international students.
Who it suits
This degree suits you if you want to teach children in primary and lower secondary school and are willing to learn Danish to a level where you can study and teach in it. You should be comfortable in an international classroom and ready to live in Denmark. Danish-speaking students who choose English as their first teaching subject can also join the international programme.
Admission, language and next steps
You need an upper secondary qualification such as the European Baccalaureate, the International Baccalaureate, Abitur, the French Option Internationale du Baccalauréat or Baccalauréat Français International, a Danish gymnasial education (STX, HF, HTX, HHX), or another foreign certificate that can be equated with a Danish upper secondary leaving certificate. You can apply while in your final year. You must also meet the specific admission requirements for your chosen teaching subjects. If you do not, you can undergo an individual competence assessment or qualify through supplementary education.
Applicants must have an average mark of 7,0 on the Danish grading scale. If your average is below 7,0, if your high school is not recognised, or if you are still finishing upper secondary school and do not have final results, you attend an online admission interview. The interview screens your suitability for the studies and the profession. You also attend a guidance interview. Applicants with a diploma from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland pay an application deposit, which is refunded if you are admitted. Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland study free of charge; other students pay a fee set by the institution. Applications for bachelor programmes go through optagelse.dk. You can contact international@ucsyd.dk with questions or to be a student for a day.
