What you will study

This is the international profile of the Danish teacher education at University College Absalon. You study to become a teacher in Denmark, with a focus on teaching in diverse classrooms and on Danish pedagogical traditions. The programme is based at Campus Vordingborg and leads to a Professional Bachelor's Degree in Education.

What you study

The programme combines academic study with practical training. You explore Danish pedagogical traditions and gain the knowledge and skills needed to teach in Danish schools, including the public school system (folkeskole). Teaching is partly in English and partly in Danish. You begin your studies in English, and if you do not already meet the Danish language requirement, you learn Danish alongside your studies. That prepares you to work in Danish schools.

After two years, you can apply for the Honours Degree. It adds 30 ECTS to your diploma and develops your intercultural and community building competences. You study alongside students from the Danish-taught teacher education programme.

How the programme is organised

The degree takes four years and is built around four periods of teaching experience at a school, so theory and practice run together from the start.

  • First year: a local Danish school, with 5 spread out days in the autumn, a 4 week block in January and 5 spread out days in the spring.
  • Second year: 5 spread out days in the autumn and 4 weeks in January, at local schools or international schools.
  • Third year: one 8 week block at a school in Denmark or abroad.
  • Fourth year: one 5 week block at a school in Denmark.

International and Danish-speaking students study side by side from day one. The campus has a strong educational community and a supportive learning environment.

Who it suits

You should be curious about Scandinavian approaches to learning and ready for an academic and personal challenge. The programme suits people who want real classroom practice early and who are willing to learn Danish to teach in Danish schools. It also suits those who may want the extra academic challenge of the Honours Degree after two years.

Admission, language and next steps

You apply through www.optagelse.dk. The application deadline for applicants with a foreign qualifying exam is 15 March at 12:00 noon. For applicants with a Danish entry examination, the deadline in quota 1 is 5 July at 12:00, and in quota 2 it is 15 March at 12:00.

Admission requires one of these certificates: a Danish upper secondary school leaving certificate (STX, HF, HHX, HTX, EUX, GIF), the Danish/French Baccalauréat (DFB), the European Baccalaureate (EB), the International Baccalaureate (IB), the Option Internationale du Baccalauréat (OIB), or another foreign qualifying examination certificate that can be equated with a Danish upper secondary school leaving certificate. You also need a grade average of at least 7.0 on the Danish grading scale, or a score from an interview of at least 30 points. English must be equivalent to Danish B-level. Danish must be equivalent to Danish A-level or 'Studieprøven i dansk', level C1. If you do not meet the Danish requirement, you can be admitted with a postponement and learn Danish alongside your studies.

If your grade average is below 7.0, or is unknown or cannot be converted to the Danish grading scale, or if you apply through an Individual Competence Assessment (ICA), you must attend an admission interview. The interview screens your suitability for the programme in relation to both academics and the profession.

Applicants who are citizens of an EU or EEA country study free of charge. Other applicants pay a tuition fee set by the institution before the start of every semester. If you apply on the basis of a foreign exam, you are encouraged to have it recognised at the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science before applying.
