What you will study

Graphic Storytelling at VIA University College in Viborg is a four-year bachelor's programme taught in English. It trains you to tell stories with pictures, for comics and graphic novels, illustration, storyboarding and preproduction for animation and games.

What you study

The first semester covers the fundamentals of creating narrative images: digital and traditional tools, design, drawing from life and perspective. In the second semester you learn to tell stories with sequential drawings, with a focus on clarity and expression. You write and draw short narratives and finish with a collaborative comic book project.

The third semester is about colour: harmonious palettes, rendering and mood. You then apply these skills to illustration for books, magazines and newspapers. The fourth semester starts with workshops on world building and design, then moves into long-form storytelling. It ends with a graphic novel pitch: 10 sample pages and a synopsis.

In the fifth semester you apply visual storytelling to preproduction for animation, games and film, and you look closer at possible career paths. The sixth semester centres on communication. You work with outside clients on an applied comics project, conveying messages to specific target audiences through comics or illustration, and you build your portfolio for internship applications.

The seventh semester is dedicated to your final production, an original comic, picture book or art-of book. In the eighth semester you do an internship in the industry of at least ten weeks. The programme ends with a bachelor report analysing your career plans based on your final production and internship.
