What you will study
What you study
The Character Animation programme at VIA University College is about one thing: making an audience believe a character is alive. You learn the theory and practice behind that, starting with pencil and paper. In the first year you work through traditional exercises, then physics-based assignments, and finally acting scenes. Once you have the basics on paper, you move to digital tools like TVPaint, Adobe, Toon Boom Harmony and After Effects. Alongside animation you take film-making courses such as film history and culture, storyboarding, layout and character design.
In the second year you bring your 2D skills into 3D using Maya. You animate computer graphic characters and touch on previz, basic modelling, rigging, lighting and rendering. The final semesters include an internship and a bachelor project, where you team up with other animation students to make films, games or other creative ventures.
