What you will study

The Master's in African Studies at the University of Copenhagen is a two-year degree taught in English. It asks big questions: what is Africa, what is Africa's place in the world, and how do you analyse the trends emerging across the continent? The programme answers them through an interdisciplinary mix of social sciences and humanities.

What you study

The degree gives you an advanced understanding of the diversity of the African continent and its relationship to the world, seen through historical, social, political, economic and cultural dimensions. Teaching combines social sciences and humanities, and the programme is built from a mix of core and elective courses. You develop strong analytical skills and learn to conduct independent research. The programme has three aims: to give you advanced knowledge of Africa and its place in the world, to build critical analytical capacities you can apply to Africa-specific conditions and to other global, national and local contexts, and to prepare you for professional work in both the public and private sectors, internationally and nationally.
