What you will study

Mechanical engineering at SDU in Sønderborg is a BEng taught in English over 3.5 years. You learn by doing: each semester has a main theme, and you spend much of your time in project groups solving real problems for companies.

What you study

The programme covers the core of mechanical engineering and the business side of it. You work with mathematics, statistics and physics, and with machine elements, materials and technology. You also study radiation and convection, thermodynamic systems and state variables, and measurement methods, data collection and processing. On top of that come project management and business understanding.

Practical skills run through the whole degree. You learn to draw in 3D CAD, build models and test prototypes in the workshop. You also learn to design products, plants and systems, choose production methods, and calculate strength, economy and durability.

How the programme is organised

Teaching is built around project work in groups, often with cases from companies. The early part of the degree focuses on product development. Later, the emphasis shifts to the engineering disciplines, including environment, economics and business management.

The sixth semester is a mandatory internship in a company, in Denmark or abroad. In the seventh semester you do a graduation project, often in cooperation with a company. The BEng is a complete degree in itself, and SDU Sønderborg offers new graduates six months of employment if they have not found their first job after finishing.

Who it suits

This suits you if you like solving concrete problems and want to see a product take shape from idea to prototype. You should be comfortable with maths and physics and enjoy working in groups on company cases. If you want to design and develop industrial products with an eye on sustainability, the programme is aimed at you.
