What you will study

This is a two year master's at the University of Southern Denmark, taught in English. It trains designers to work in multidisciplinary teams that build interactive IT products and services for private and public organisations. The programme sits at SDU Design, on the Kolding campus.

What you study

The teaching covers theories, methods and tools for designing human-centred innovation. That means design processes, user participation in design, work practice studies, human machine interaction, IT technologies, design team learning, and design visualisation and communication.

The curriculum runs over four semesters:

  • First semester: Design Research Horizon
  • Second semester: Participatory Practices
  • Third semester: Research Organisation
  • Fourth semester: Master Thesis, the graduation project

You choose one of two specialisations. Participatory Innovation looks at how to understand and facilitate a product and service innovation process in a complex social context with many stakeholders, and how multi-stakeholder engagement can produce radical new solutions. It also builds material skills and runs experiments on how design materials can support collaboration and change among stakeholders. Embodied Design is about designing products and services on, for, or in close interaction with the human body. It explores how new materials and the spread of wearable devices open up design possibilities, and how to involve different stakeholder perspectives with equal weight on minds and bodies.
