About this programme

Master in Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture is a Master's Degree programme at Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby, taught in English. It runs for 2 years. The register gives Hirtshals as the campus town. It lists the degree as Master (2 years). Technical University of Denmark is a research university in Capital Region.

What you will study

The MSc in Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture at DTU is about the technology behind how we produce food from the sea. You learn to build engineering solutions that raise production, cut environmental impact and use resources more efficiently. The programme sits where engineering meets life science, so you get both technical and biological knowledge.

What you study

The teaching covers aquaculture production systems, water treatment technology, water quality, feed resources, production biology and welfare, low-trophic aquaculture, and the genetics of fish stocks. You can also work with conservation, fisheries ecology, anthropogenic change, fishing technology, digital monitoring, ecosystem management and data-driven methods. Emerging areas such as the circular economy and machine learning are part of the mix.

How the programme is organised

DTU gives you a high degree of flexibility. You can pick a specialisation or build your own profile from elective courses. There are two named specialisations:

  • Fisheries, Biodiversity and Resource management: sustainable fishing technologies, management and conservation in aquatic ecosystems, fish stock productivity and genetics, fishing gear design, recreational fishing, digital monitoring and data-driven approaches.
  • Aquaculture: advanced aquaculture systems, land-based fish farming, water treatment, resource-efficient production, low-trophic aquaculture of algae and shellfish, animal welfare, nutritional physiology and resource utilisation.

There is also an international option: a joint international master's programme in Sustainable Aquaculture with NTNU. Teaching runs through coursework, group work and projects, so you train your analytical and technical skills while learning to work across disciplines. You can also join DTU's Industry Master, which combines study with work in a company.

Who it suits

This programme fits you if you want to work on the engineering side of fisheries and aquaculture: improving land-based systems, designing fishing gear, or handling data and monitoring. You should be comfortable with both technology and biology, and keen on sustainability as a practical design goal rather than a slogan.

Admission, language and next steps

Everything is taught in English. To apply, check the academic requirements and selection criteria on the programme's prerequisites page. Applicants with a bachelor's degree from outside Denmark apply through DTU's International Admissions Office, and you apply directly to DTU for a master's. Study Guidance can answer questions on course planning, credit transfer and exemptions. Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland study free of charge; other students pay a fee that DTU sets.

Job opportunities after graduating

  • Development engineer designing fishing gear
  • Aquaculture engineer working with land-based systems
  • Specialist in digital monitoring and data analysis
  • Equipment and technology companies, such as water treatment and aquaculture system suppliers
  • Fisheries companies
  • Marine ingredients and feed production
  • Public authorities, consultancy and international organisations working with regulation and sustainable resource management
  • PhD research at DTU or other universities in Denmark and abroad
